EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL (ESA) ASSESSMENTS & LETTERS
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is a document written by a qualified mental health professional that explains how having an animal supports your emotional well-being. It confirms that your pet provides comfort and stability as part of your mental health care. This letter can be helpful in situations where animals aren’t usually allowed for example, when arranging housing or travel, as it shows that your animal plays an important role in helping you manage your mental health.
ESA letters can be written by a range of professionals, including your GP, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist. It’s important to make sure the person writing your letter is appropriately qualified and registered. For example, psychologists should be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and psychiatrists with the General Medical Council (GMC), to ensure your letter is valid and recognised.

WHAT IS INVOLVED & HOW MUCH DOES AN ESA LETTER COST?
An ESA Assessment usually takes between 60–90 minutes and can be completed either online or in person. The assessment, carried out by an HCPC-registered psychologist, has two parts. The first is a comprehensive clinical interview where you’ll discuss your current mental health, background, and how your emotional support animal contributes to your emotional well-being. The second part involves completing a set of psychometric measures to support the assessment process.
The total cost for the ESA assessment and letter is £300. The typical turnaround time for receiving your letter is one week, although in some cases it can be turned around within 1 day of your assessment.
